Guard Program
The San Leandro High School Guard Program (also known as the Sport of the Arts) offers students an exciting opportunity to explore the world of performing arts through both Color Guard and Winter Guard. This program provides a blend of athleticism, artistry, and teamwork, all while building confidence and discipline. Under the leadership of experienced instructors, including head guard instructor Douglas Slocum, members of the Guard Program learn flag, rifle, and sabre techniques, along with dance choreography, while working together to create captivating visual performances.
What is Color Guard & Winter Guard
Want to spin flag, sabre, and gear while dancing. Want to be part of the Marching Band's visuals? Guard is RIGHT FOR YOU!
COLOR GUARD
Color Guard is an integral part of the school's marching band program and performs during the fall season. It is often referred to as the "sport of the arts," as it combines dance, acrobatics, and the manipulation of equipment such as flags, rifles, and sabres. The Color Guard adds a stunning visual element to the marching band’s field show, enhancing the overall production.
Color Guard performances take place during football games, local parades, and field competitions, where the team performs alongside the marching band. The fall season typically runs from late summer through November, aligning with the marching band season.
WINTER GUARD
Winter Guard, on the other hand, is a standalone activity that takes place in the winter and spring months, from December through April. Unlike Color Guard, Winter Guard performs indoors in a gymnasium and is not part of the marching band. The focus is on a more theatrical and dramatic style of performance, featuring sophisticated choreography, advanced equipment handling, and elaborate music selections.
Winter Guard teams compete in local circuits and regional competitions, showcasing intricate, themed routines that tell a story or evoke powerful emotions. This version of Guard offers a more intimate and creative setting for performers to express themselves artistically.
GUIDELINES
While the San Leandro High School Guard Program often finds itself in competitive environments, our primary mission remains the celebration of music, dance, and spinning. Through a commitment to understanding and discipline, we foster an environment that prioritizes enjoyment and artistic expression. In doing so, we proudly uphold the standards set by the State of California, as well as key organizations such as the Northern California Band Association (NCBA), Western Band Association (WBA), California Color Guard Circuit (CCGC), and Winter Guard International (WGI).
