Ryan A. Gonzalez-Phillips is the Director of Bands at San Leandro High School in San Leandro, California. A native of the East Bay, Mr. Phillips grew up in Hayward and received his early education in the Hayward Unified School District. His musical journey began in elementary school with choir participation and expanded in the 5th grade to include instrumental music. Under the tutelage of Osborn (Harder Elementary, 1997-2004), Robin Moyle (Bret Harte Middle School, 2004-2006), and Mr. Brian Holbrook (Hayward High School, 2006-2009), Mr. Phillips developed a strong foundation in music.
From 2009 to 2014, Mr. Phillips pursued his undergraduate studies at California State University, East Bay (Hayward, CA), where he studied under esteemed faculty including Dr. Wesley Broadnax, Dr. John Eros, Frank La Rocca, and Danielle Gaudry. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition and subsequently engaged in various audio production courses, working as a producer and engineer. In 2020, he completed his credential program at CSU East Bay.
Mr. Phillips brings a wealth of experience in music, with moderate proficiency in percussion, bass, guitar, and cello, and advanced skills in piano and trumpet. He specializes in the French Horn and has performed with the San Ramon Community Band and a local Brass Band. Additionally, Mr. Phillips has been active in electronic music for over eight years as a bass house producer and DJ. He has also taught private lessons for seven years and has five years of experience in public school teaching. These diverse experiences have contributed to his development as a versatile musician, composer, producer, DJ, and sound engineer.
