Douglas Slocum is a dedicated and experienced educator in the world of color guard, currently serving as the head guard instructor for San Leandro High School. With a passion for performance and a commitment to excellence, Douglas has helped guide and inspire countless students to achieve their highest potential in the visual arts. His leadership and creative vision have been instrumental in developing a strong and competitive winter guard program at the school.
In the fall of 2023, Douglas achieved a major milestone by creating and debuting San Leandro High School’s Winter Guard program. This initiative brought the school its first competitive winter guard team, and under his guidance, the program quickly developed into a force within the local circuit. His ability to build the team from the ground up speaks to his exceptional leadership and teaching skills, as well as his commitment to expanding opportunities for students in the performing arts.
Before joining San Leandro High School, Douglas performed with Blue Devils - A Corps (2008) & In-Motion Performance Ensemble , participating in Drum Corps International - World Championship & Winter Guard International, where he gained extensive experience in both the technical and artistic aspects of color guard. His performances have showcased his versatility and precision, contributing to his deep understanding of movement and visual storytelling.
Douglas has also held instructional roles at Clayton Valley High School (Concord), Irvington High School (Fremont), and Arroyo High School (San Lorenzo), where he was responsible for the development of both high school and independent guard programs. His experience spans over 15 years, during which he has consistently demonstrated his ability to elevate the skill levels of his students, leading them to success in local and regional competitions.
Known for his attention to detail and supportive teaching style, Douglas creates an environment where students can thrive both individually and as a team. His focus on innovation and storytelling through movement continues to raise the bar for San Leandro's guard program, ensuring that each season is a memorable and transformative experience for his students.
